The Moving Van Goghs was formed in Manhattan, KS in 1986 while the members (Michael Leggs, Mitchell Leggs, Brian Harris, David Walker) at Kansas State University, and quickly built a local following with their unique brand of rock/punk psychedelia and later became an integral part of a thriving alternative music scene in the Midwest that came to the attention of the national recording industry.

The band  released three independent recordings:  The Moving Van Goghs (1988), Wintermind EP (1990), and Octaphenia EP (1992), to tour regionally, and to share the stage with acts that included: The Flaming Lips, Nova Mob, The Lemonheads, These Immortal Souls, The Swans, Too Much Joy, B.O.M.B., The Embarrassment, Scruffy the Cat, The Pedaljets and Love Tractor.
